is strategically located on the Niger River in Mali. The fertile lands
of the area surrounding it have been the granaries for powerful neighbours
for centuries. Major trade routes from Western Africa through the Sahara
to the North, and on to Europe, passed through this region and Malians
took full commercial advantage of the situation as successive empires flourished.
Bamako is the capital of Mali and has a reputation of being a mecca for
those seeking a traditional cultural experience. Traditions are alive within
Mali's ethnic groups: in their complex social structure, daily lives, festivals,

city is home to various ethnic groups such as the Bambara (Bamana), Malinke,
Sarakole, Peul (Fulani), Tuareg and Dogon among others. Bambara and Malinke
make up a large portion of the population although you will occasionally
observe people of Tuareg ethnicity. These people are easy to spot with
their beautifully-hued colourful clothing and unique jewelry. Bambara is
